It was a big week for workforce development, capital investment and jobs  in West Tennessee culminating in Unilever's announcement that plant expansion in Covington will make West Tennessee home to several world-renowned products.

On Monday,  Gov. Haslam and I met in Shelby County at the Tennessee College of Applied Technology (TCAT) to announce more than $2.77 million in workforce development grants to TCAT and Southwest Tennessee Community College.

TCAT – Memphis received grants of $550,000 and $663,398 for equipment to enhance its programs in the Avionics and Aircraft Maintenance programs and the Advanced Manufacturing program. Southwest Tennessee Community College received $1,550,090 for its mechatronics program which integrates business training programs and credit programs to provide students pathways from adult training to an academic award. Funding will allow Southwest to provide training in multiple locations from Covington to Memphis and into western Fayette County.
On Tuesday, we traveled to Dyersburg to announce a $589,022 grant to Dyersburg State Community College for two advanced manufacturing labs — in Dyersburg and Tipton County — and to support an Associate of Applied Science degree in Advanced Manufacturing program including industry-recognized certificates for mechatronics and certified production technicians.
