NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Tennessee Senate Majority Leader Mark Norris (R-Collierville) was re-elected Chairman of the Tennessee Advisory Commission on Intergovernmental Relations (TACIR) at their June 29 meeting.  Mayor Tom Rowland of Cleveland was re-elected its Vice-Chairman.

TACIR is a permanent state agency established by the General Assembly in 1978 to monitor the operation of federal-state-local relations and make recommendations for improvements.  TACIR’s mission is to serve as a forum for the discussion and resolution of intergovernmental problems; provide high quality research support to state and local officials to improve the overall quality of life in Tennessee; and to improve the effectiveness of intergovernmental systems to better serve Tennesseans.  Norris was first elected TACIR Chairman in 2009.

“My service on TACIR has been a unique and rewarding experience complimenting my service as a legislator,” said Norris.  “What I have learned, and what the Commission continues to explore, covers a wide range of issues affecting our everyday lives in Tennessee.  I am honored that my colleagues again entrusted me with the Chairmanship of this important body.”

Leader Norris has represented Senate District 32 since 2000 and has been a member of TACIR since 2001.  He was elected Senate Majority Leader in 2007 and is the first West Tennessean to serve as Republican Senate Majority Leader in state history.  Norris also serves as Chair of the Senate Rules Committee and as a member of Senate Ethics; Calendar; Finance, Ways & Means; and State and Local Government Committees.  No stranger to local leadership, Leader Norris was twice elected to the Shelby County Commission prior to his election to the Senate.  He also currently chairs the Southern Legislative Conference of the Council of State Governments which includes 15 southern states and will hold its annual meeting in Memphis in July.

Senate District 32 consists of Dyer, Lauderdale, Tipton, and Shelby Counties.  Leader Norris is Special Counsel with the law firm of Adams and Reese LLP in downtown Memphis.  The Norris family makes their home in Collierville.
