NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Tennessee Senate Majority Leader Mark Norris (R-Collierville) released the following statement regarding the death of his colleague, State Representative Ulysses Jones, Jr.:

“We are shocked and saddened at the news of the untimely death of Rep. Ulysses Jones. Words cannot adequately convey our sorrow at this loss.

Ulysses and I forged a friendship from adversarial roles; adversarial in the purest sense of the word. We often disagreed on issues of public policy – particularly in education – but we never disagreed that we were unified in working to do what we thought was best for the people of Tennessee.

We worked closely together as colleagues in the Shelby County legislative delegation. Most recently, he and I worked closely to resolve differences between House and Senate in passing the State budget.

Ulysses Jones was a public servant. As a firefighter, he fought to keep folks safe. In his own way, he carried that fight forward in the legislature as he saw fit for the people of his district.

I am fortunate to have known and worked with Ulysses Jones. He made a difference in many ways, and neither he nor his work will soon be forgotten.”
