Hurricane Katrina got many Memphis people thinking about disaster preparedness, which in this region would most likely mean an earthquake. So the University of Memphis will host a community meeting Oct. 28, to outline local disaster plans, and answer questions. Along with earthquake experts from the university's Center for Earthquake Research and Information, the panel discussion will include U.S. Rep. Harold Ford Jr., R-Memphis; State Sen. Mark Norris, R-Collierville, chairman of the Tennessee Senate Transportation Committee; and, State Rep. Joe Towns Jr., D-Memphis, chairman of the Shelby County delegation. There will also be representatives from FEMA, the Tennessee Emergency Management Agency, the Department of Homeland Security and Shelby County emergency planning. Following a panel discussion the floor will be opened to questions from the audience. The event begins at 7 p.m. in the Rose Auditorium on the campus of the U of M.
