Department Of Safety Questions Consistency of Background Checks

There are some tough questions targeting the background checks done for the Tennessee Highway Patrol.

Senator Mark Norris chairs a panel with Department of Safety. Recently, the Governor Bredesen ordered background checks on all THP officers after allegations of corruption within the department. Friday, Norris said some of the background checks are inconsistent and this will be the focus of the investigation.

“More than 40 officers are alleged to have checkered pasts some with felony convictions who have been employed and are still employed by the highway patrol,” said Senator Mark Norris.

Three top Safety officials resigned, or retired in the past week.
