Tennessee Lawmakers Plan English Only Vote

A battle over the English language could brew over in the Tennessee Senate tonight.
Lawmakers, meeting at 6pm Eastern, will be asked to require everyone to take the written driver license exam in English. The bill, sponsored by Murfreesboro Republican Bill Ketron, aims to prevent illegal immigrants from obtaining identification. Anyone presenting federal documents showing they're in the country legally could take the test in another language.
The Governor calls the proposal "political posturing." But during a visit to Chattanooga today, Senate Majority leader Mark Norris pointed out this bill mirrors the administration's current policy for foreign nationals. "I think its just a question of Ketron getting his legislation there to codify what is already in existing regulations and maybe the administration is a little embarrassed by that," Norris tells WDEF News 12.
This marks the first of over two-dozen pieces of immigration legislation to make it to the floor this session.
