Members of Boy Scout Troop 88 honored local World War II veterans with a special breakfast on Saturday, Sept. 29.
During the breakfast, Dustin Strube updated the veterans on his Eagle Scout project to establish a monument remembering World War II veterans. He said a dark-gray granite pillar has been ordered and should be delivered soon. An unveiling ceremony is tentatively planned for a Sunday in October or November on the court square.
Individuals and local businesses have donated about 86 percent of the money needed to complete the project. Donations are still needed and may be sent to the Dyersburg/Dyer County Chamber of Commerce, 2000 Commerce St., Dyersburg 38024. |

State Sen. Mark Norris congratulates Dustin Strube on his continued success with the Dyer County WWII Memorial. Strube is establishing a monument for his Eagle Scout project. |
Nearly 70 people, including State Sen. Mark Norris, attended the buffet of sausage, ham, eggs and hot biscuits.
They also viewed photographs charting the monument's progress and examined items -- such as identification tags, copies of separation papers, ration cards, photos of uniformed soldiers and a copy of the Notice Of Surrender signed by Gen. Douglas MacArthur -- that have been donated for a monument time capsule. Additional time-capsule items may be taken to the chamber office.
A special thanks was extended to the businesses contributing to the breakfast: Sara Lee Foods, Burks Beverages, Kroger, Wal-Mart, Daylight Donuts, McDonald's and FoodRite. |
